Eye Dominance Regardless of your choice of
tackle the most fundamental decision is whether to shoot right or
left-handed. You might think thisa
depends on hand dominance, but that’s not true. It really depends on eye dominance. And the two are not always the same. To determine eye dominance keep
both eyes open and point with your index finger at a distant object, say a
power pole across the street. Now
close your left eye. If your finger
still appears to be pointing directly at the pole, the your right eye is
dominant. If, however, your finger
appears to be pointing to the right of the pole, you probably have a dominant
left eye. To double check this, start
again with both eyes open. Now close
your right eye. If while looking with
only your left eye, your finger appears to be pointing directly at the pole,
you clearly have a dominant left eye. Accepted wisdom says you should
shoot on the side of your dominant eye, regardless of hand dominance, and I
believe that is right. A friend of
mine, who is right-handed, was having
a terrible time aiming his bow. He
just seemed confused. Checking his eye
dominance, we discovered he had a strongly dominant left eye. We switched him to a left-handed bow, and
his shooting improved instantly and dramatically. A number of prominent archers are
right-handed but shoot left-handed bows for this reason. Thus, I would advise you to
shoot on the side of your dominant eye.
It will make aiming much easier.
Overall, you will shoot more naturally and comfortably if you aim with
your dominant eye. source: *THE BOWHUNTER’S GUIDE by Dwight
Schuh *Here at OklahomaWhitetail.com, we
very strongly recommend this book.
While it is an older book on archery, the bow hunting truths and
shooting technique taught are priceless to the avid bow hunter.
